Found at market on our latest buying trip to Paris, we are so pleased to offer these gorgeous antique miniature portraits, capturing the romance and beauty of early 19th century France. Exquisitely hand-painted with fine details, the portraits are framed in richly stained wood.
In a time before photography, miniature portraits were often an intimate gift given within the family as a means to keep an image of loved ones close. Particularly popular among the nobility and gentry of England and France (as well as sweethearts and soldiers), miniatures could be produced in surprising petite sizes.
The first miniature is of a lady unknown, with soft brown curls tucked under a mob cap, while the second features a more famous and recognizable visage - that of a young man born second in line to the throne of France, a man with a great fondness for maps, mechanics, and locks - the doomed French King Louis XVI.
